I thought this would be appropriate for my first post. I've been letting my hair grow out all winter, with trims of course. I wanted it long for a wedding I was in - in January.
I had all intentions of cutting it off this spring for a new summer do! I decided to keep it long for my cousin's wedding in FL in April.
One night after the wedding I decided I should measure my hair to see if I could donate it to someone. I've heard lots about locks for love, but didn't stop there. My step-dad asked if there are other places that take hair? Hmmm...GREAT QUESTION! I found an organization near my old college stomping grounds called Pantene Beautiful Lengths located in New Richmond, WI. They collect hair for women with cancer. As I was reading stories, just sobbing. While reading what people go through with cancer, I decided this was a good fit for me and my hair! Plus you only need to donate 8" instead of 10-12 with most other organizations.
I usually cry or shed some sort of tear every time I get my hair cut. I HATE change, especially when it comes to my hair..haha! So this took a little courage and talking myself into doing it. I made the appt, went in, she put it in pig tails and cut them off. I couldn't believe it, I didn't cry or anything!! It felt so good, I haven't had my neck exposed for probably 21 years. I've always had hair below my chin. Always. I went in prepared, I had several pictures, would measure my hair 10 different ways, have my co-worker measure it. I brought rubber bands in, brought my ruler, a plastic bag - just like the directions said. My hairstylist laughed the entire time at how prepared I was.
So here are the after pictures with my hair. I was a tad obsessed with taking a ton of after pictures. Now, it only takes 20 minutes to dry, straighten, curl and style! Before it would take upwards of 45 minutes. This is way better! It's my little inverted, mom-bob and I LOVE IT!
I am hoping whoever receives this hair is blessed, because I was blessed in donating it. My hair stylist even cut it for free, she said if you donate your hair, I'll donate my time. NO WAY!
I have a special place for people who have cancer, because I am a thyroid cancer survivor. I requested that my hair go to a woman who walked the same road I did. I didn't loose my hair, but it did thin quite a bit. Luckily I have very thick hair. Not all women have that option.
I've learned through this whole process to do everything with purpose. If you are wanting a new summer do, I challenge you to grow it one more inch to meet the 8" donation. It will bless the socks off of you, like it did me.
Although I just put my hair in the envelope to send tomorrow, I came home after work this week and would just look at it and smile. This has been a great experience and one I hope to repeat soon!
